A waterspout is a weather phenomenon that resembles a tornado but occurs over water. It is essentially a rotating column of air that forms over a body of water, typically a lake or ocean. Waterspouts are usually classified as either tornadic or non-tornadic.

Tornadic waterspouts are similar to tornadoes in that they form from supercell thunderstorms and are associated with severe weather. Non-tornadic waterspouts, on the other hand, form from smaller, less severe storms and are generally less intense.

Waterspouts can be dangerous if they come ashore, as they can cause damage to structures and boats. However, they typically dissipate once they make landfall. If you see a waterspout while on a boat or near the water, it is important to move away from the area and seek shelter.
