The RESTRICT Act is the Patriot Act 2.0
The RESTRICT Act is a flat out invasion of free speech and will empower the executive branch with more power that it will inevitably use to spy and harass Americans. We have seen how the Patriot Act failed to stop almost any terrorism attacks. Instead, the Patriot Act has been used to spy and harass normal working class Americans.
The RESTRICT Act would authorize the Secretary of Commerce to restrict or ban digital products and services from countries that are deemed to be foreign adversaries. Currently, those countries are China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Venezuela, but the Secretary of Commerce would have the power to add countries.
If a person or company violates the RESTRCIT Act, they can be fined up to a quarter million dollars in civil penalties or $1 million in fines and 20 years imprisonment for criminal penalties.
The thing is that foreign governments have a million different ways to spy on Americans. There are much better ways than social media platforms. Trump’s attempt to ban TikTok was found unconstitutional. The RESTRICT Act is clearly unconstitutional as well.
