Mother! - All Symbolism No Substance

Darren Aronnofsky's 'Mother!' is in an awkward position. It makes so little sense if you have no knowledge of the Bible or environmentalism that it would struggle to stand on its own merits, without the pronounced allegory.
I appreciate Mother! for the artful manner in which it conveys its deeper meaning but I can't help but feel that a movie without a solid foundation of writing and characterization is a bad movie.
