The Holiness Standard | AS BOLD AS LIONS DEVOTIONAL | June 9, 2023

You shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine. Leviticus 20:26

As ancient Israel prepared to enter the Promised Land ordained for them by God, there were many rules and statutes placed upon them. Moses received the Ten Commandments from the Lord. In addition, there were prescriptions for daily life that had to be followed. Some of these things may seem strange to us now but they were given with good reason and for the health and preservation of the people. With Jesus comes a new covenant which replaces the old covenant of the Old Testament. This did not, however, replace the need for everyone (Jews and Gentiles alike), to be holy and consecrated to the Lord.

1 Peter 1:15,16 echoes the words that were given to Moses and applies them to our new lives in Christ: “But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” The holiness we are called to is a standard that may seem daunting. We know only Jesus is perfect. But His holiness is an attribute we are to strive for as Christians. This applies to our daily lives just as it did to the Israelites. We model Christ through our words, speech, and actions. We consecrate ourselves to Him and honor Him as holy because He is. From there, God calls us His own; a redeemed people for His will and purpose. The holiness standard is for our good and His glory.

Question for today: In what ways am I called to live in holiness today which may look different than the world around me?

Pray: Lord thank You for the standard of holiness I see in Jesus. Help me to model Christ in my life today.
