In the first of a new series for this channel, I speak to newly elected councillor Nigel Jacklin about his motivation and ambition. What makes a good local politician? Find out this and more tonight at 7pm GMT

The Democratic Network was set up in January 2021. We help people get involved in local elections and undertake research.

Our first research project concerned censorship, free speech and electronic payments. The decision to undertake this survey was prompted by PayPal’s decision to close a number of organisations’ accounts. We launched the survey after this issue was raised in parliament by Danny Kruger MP on 22 September. The Free Speech Union helped us with the survey; they were one of the organisations whose accounts had been closed. Our report, published in September 2022, is here.
