Schools are eliminating honors classes in the name of equity

Honors classes are Culver City High School were eliminated because there were not enough Black and Latino students enrolled in them. Previously, any student could opt into honors classes but now there is just one level of English class for example. The superintendent claimed that it was jarring there was a lack of black and brown students signed up for classes and teachers felt obligated to rectify the situation, which in this case, seems to be axing honors classes altogether. Now, no one gets to take honors English.
The schools eliminating honors classes argue that if students don’t take honor classes at young ages, they see themselves as a lower tier of student that can’t enroll in advanced placement classes.
Equity should mean offering opportunities to students of diverse backgrounds, not taking away opportunities for advanced education. Schools should not be experiments in social justice at the cost of academic excellence.
