St. John Nepomucene, whose feast day is celebrated on May 16, was born in 1330 in Nepomuk, Bohemia. As a child, he was cured of a grave illness by the Holy Virgin Mary.

Despite receiving offers of high positions and titles from King Wenceslas IV, St. John chose to remain a regular canon. He was even chosen as the confessor of the Empress. However, when the King grew jealous and suspicious, he demanded that St. John reveal the Empress's confessions.

The saint refused, even after torture and imprisonment. Eventually, the king ordered him to be drowned in the river. As John's body hit the water, five stars appeared, a miraculous sign witnessed by the people. The Queen confronted the King with the miracle, leaving him disturbed. St. John Nepomucene became a revered saint and was canonized in 1729. St. John Nepomucene's life exemplifies unwavering fidelity to the sacramental seal of confession, even in the face of persecution and martyrdom. His martyrdom serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the sacredness of confession and the need for true Catholic fidelity in times of spiritual crisis.
