Tips for selling your car and dealing with certified checks

A certified check is not as safe as you think
Let’s suppose you are trying to sell your old car. You are told that a cashier’s check is as safe as money in the bank. Is it? Well, no actually. Car purchases are known to involve a lot of fraud on the part of buyers.
I would advise that you avoid checks, even a cashiers check. If you must do a cashiers check, then make sure you verify the cashiers check by calling the issuing institution and having them verify it. They will ask you for the check number and amount. You can’t just meet at the bank. The bank will not know if the check is legit until the money is drawn from the account.
If you are selling a car, you should meet at the bank and get the funds from the bank in cash. Do not accept a check in any form.
I know several people that have done a lot of transactions involving car purchases and they do nearly all their deals in cash.
Do not let someone drive off with your car unless they have it insured, tagged, and titled. You should take the license plates and return the to the DMV yourself. You must surrender those plates. Never let someone drive off in your car with your plates.
If you are doing a private sale, get two forms of ID in case you need to go to civil court or pursue criminal charges.
