How Brandon Johnson Won The Chicago Mayoral Race

Jarod Facundo and Luke Goldstein, writing fellows at The American Prospect, join Emma Vigeland to discuss the factors that led to Brandon Johnson's victory in the Chicago mayoral race. They look at the high-profile national endorsements Johnson received, including those from Bernie Sanders and James Clyburn, that helped his campaign activate the youth vote and gain the support of donors outside of Chicago.

The nationalization of the race helped Johnson to raise his profile and to gain name recognition, however, as Facundo and Goldstein explain, the ground game and organizing that Johnson's campaign used was extremely effective in getting out the vote. They highlight the work of United Working Families and the Chicago Teachers Union and Rocio Garcia's organization of volunteers in knocking on doors and making phone calls. Another factor in Johnson's victory was his focus on courting Latino voters, who were a key demographic in the race. The campaign worked with community organizations and churches to reach out to Latino voters.
