Death rates for American children are at the highest level in 15 years.

The gains from modern medicine, automobile safety, smoke detectors, swimming lesson, bicycle helmets, etc are being offset by four causes of death. The fatality rate of American children is being driven by homicides, drug overdoses, car accidents, and suicides.
The pandemic caused social disruption that exacerbated public health problems. It worsened anxiety and depression. When schools closed and sports were cancelled, it limited in person socializing which made the mental health epidemic worse. The demand for psychiatric services and behavioral health outstripped the supply.
Dangerous driving and more lethal narcotics contributed to death rates.
Suicide rates between the age of 10 and 19 started increasing in 2007. Homicide rates for that age range started increasing in 2013. ERs are seeing children as young as 8 to 10 with suicidal ideation.
Since 1999, death rates of middle age white Americans have been increasing due to suicide, alcohol abuse, drug overdoses, and chronic liver disease.
In 2020, life expectancy fell 1.8 years which is the largest decline since World War II.
