Pssst! I want to share a secret with you that basically no vocal coaches share, teach, or even know. There is only one true sound that grows the voice. I'm not kidding!
I simply ask that you try this for 30 days. Yes, 30 days. Look how long you've already spent on your voice and how far have you gotten!
I'm not gonna bore you with the pedagogy and physiology of how all this works. But I'm going to show you how to do this specific sound in this video.
What many coaches don't know is that the "overuse" of air is the arch enemy to the voice.
I want you to visualize something for me.
I want you to think of your vocal cords like two rubber bands stretching with an automatic natural lubricant that keeps them moist, resilient, flexible, and elastic (this is an easy way to understand your vocal cords as they are made of hundreds of strands of collagen).
Now, think of your hands pulling these rubber bands from top to bottom carefully and strategically, stretching them up and down.
These represent the two muscle structures that do exactly this to your vocal cords.
The cricothyroid are the vocal fold "lengtheners." They pull the thyroid cartilage down and forward on its hinge, which increases the distance between the arytenoids and the thyroid notch (the Adam's Apple), thereby lengthening and tightening the vocal folds. This causes them to vibrate faster, thus raising pitch.
Then we have the cricoarytenoid muscle (Stay with me! Stay with me!). The cricoarytenoid muscle is the only muscle of the larynx that abducts the vocal cords and therefore opens the rima glottidis. It is an antagonist muscle to the lateral cricoarytenoid muscle which acts to protect the airway by closing the glottis.
Yes, there are more physiological aspects to this, and this may already be too much technical information, so I want you to envision how these two muscles and cartilage structures work by simply stretching your vocal cords up and down as you phonate (or create sound).
The more "pull" on the cords, the higher up in pitch you go...
OK ! Back to the only "true" sound that grows your voice!
If too much air is allowed to pass across your cords, it will dry them out, you will lose flexibility, elasticity and resiliency in the cords themselves, and they will become leathery. When this happens, these tiny strands of collagen start to snap or break apart (this is one of the many ways you go hoarse when you talk or sing).
But if you know how to carefully manage (or mitigate) this air with a very bright "ping" tone, you can train the cords to get stronger and stronger without the overuse of air (much like breathing into a reed of grass between your fingers to create a whistle sound).
So I have coined my own phrase: "Ping is King!"
And I will walk you through how to grow your voice like you never thought possible.
