Guinea President Sekou Toure Discovers An Alleged French-Backed Plot To Overthrow His Government

President Ahmad Sekou Toure of Guinea announcing the discovery of an alleged French-backed plot to overthrow his government. He was speaking at the official opening of the Consultative Conference of the World Federation of Trade Unions and the Pan-African Trade Union in Conakry.

Toure told the delegates that dozens of civilian and military "traitors" had been rounded up and put in jail. He called on what he termed the "progressive parties" of socialist countries and revolutionary movements in the world to cooperate closely in the struggle against "imperialism".

The delegates came from Cameroon, Dahomey (later Benin Republic), France, Niger, East Germany, Finland, Malagasy, Sudan, Tanzania and Angola.

The alleged plot which came to be known as Komplot KAMAN-FODEBA was supposedly an attempt to overthrow his government using members of Guinea's armed forces. Sekou Toure had become suspicious of his military after the military overthrows of his regional allies Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana and Modibo Keita in Mali.

The alleged coup plotters were Fodeba Keita, the Secretary of State for Defence and Colonel Kaman Diaby, the Deputy Chief of Army Staff, and later the Secretary of Service Civique .
