Odartey-Wellington, a member of the Supreme Military Council led by Lt. General Frederick Akuffo, was killed while attempting to crush a military uprising on June 4th 1979. On May 15th 1979, he had successfully put down a rebellion and had appeared to do the same on June 4th before he was shot to death outside Nima Police Station, where he had gone to surrender after running out of bullets during a gun battle with mutinous soldiers.
