Why should the gospel attract persecution? (Matthew 5:10-12)

Two thousand years after the first Christians were persecuted by the Jews, adherents of the world's largest religion continue to be targeted because of their faith. In most of the world, they are mocked and silenced, but in some regions, they are jailed or even killed.

However, why does all this happen? What is so threatening about the gospel of peace?
