Mr AMG on Stelvio Quadrifoglio! The 503bhp SUV with Ferrari DNA!

The First Quadrifoglio SUV! And it’s the Fastest SUV in the World! Welcome back to RBR, and here is that very fast mid-sized SUV you may have heard whispered on bated breath of petrol heads; the one that takes the class leading formula of the Gillian Quadrifoglio Sports Sedan, and applies it to the popular SUV niche. Alfa Romeo’s new Stelio Quadrifoglio!!

I thoroughly covered the history of the Quadrifoglio brand going into the Giulia, going back to the original of the badge with Enzo Ferraro, Ugo Sivochi and crew. But I purposely neglected to mention just how this rebirth of the Alfa Brand came about and who was behind it.

You see because the Stelvio was actually planned at the same time the Giulia was! And was dreamed up by late Alfa boss Sergio Marchionne, who put together a team of ex-Ferrari engineers including Roberto Fedeli, Philippe Krief and Gianluca Pivetti!

And so began work on a new flexible Platform dubbed “Giorgio”. A platform that cost 5 billion euros to develop, and one meant to create various body styles, but all to be class leading in dynamism.

First was the Giulia, and now comes the Stelvio Quadrifoglio. The first ever SUV Quadrifoglio. It houses that same 503 BHP V6 twin turbo, the same sweet 8 speed gear box. It’s the lightest in class by 100kg at least thanks to use of aluminium in the engine, bonnet, wheel arches, doors, tailgate and much more, as well as a carbon fibre prop shaft.

But unlike the RWD Giulia, this has Alfa’s Q4 all wheel drive, and we’ll see how that behaves in the review.

But will the car behave enough like the Giulia to make it worthy enough on it’s own? And being an SUV, it is compelling enough for us petrolheads to accept as a proper sports car?
