Pokemon began airing on March 1st, 1997, in Japan. The first few games (blue and red version) were released prior to this.

The original name of Pokemon was "Pocket Monsters", which is abbreviated as "Pokémon". The name "Pokémon" is a combination of "pocket" and "monster". The first few games came before the animated television show. The show quickly elevated Pokemon's popularity across the world. To this date, there are 100+ Pokemon Video games.
