The influence of high-yield ETFs on the underlying bond market has significantly increased, according to a study by Coalition Greenwich. The research reveals that the average daily notional volume of the underlying bonds in high-yield ETFs rose from 30.5% in 2021 to 47.4% in 2022, meaning that these ETFs accounted for nearly half of the daily traded value of the bonds.

This surge in influence is attributed to the electronification of bond trading, which has transformed the market and led to improved price discovery, liquidity, and tighter spreads. Despite their growing influence, it is important to note that corporate bond markets still significantly outweigh the assets under management of ETFs, with the former totaling $10.1tn compared to the latter's $185bn.
