Sure, some shows “come to a natural end,” but someone somewhere said “enough,” and to avoid endless discussions about whether a title was “cancelled” or “retired” — Westworld  and The Man Who Fell to Earth  were cancelled, but The Flash and The Handmaid’s Tale get to come to their natural conclusions — we’re going with the one designation. Last year saw the departure of chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz, the man associated with bringing in the broadcast network’s robust line of superhero programming and ushering it away from teen soaps like Gossip Girl. Now The CW’s entertainment president, Brad Schwartz, said during a recent press call that superhero shows “had their time” on the channel.
It’s true that The CW stalwarts like The Flash and Riverdale, which are both based on comic book characters, are ending their long runs. But the network has also cancelled other series like Walker Independence, a spin-off of its popular Walker, Texas Ranger reboot, and The Winchesters, a spin-off to its long-running and hugely popular Supernatural series. Kung Fu, a modern-day (and more progressive) version of the David Carradine series Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, was also cancelled.
Upcoming The CW programming include Joan, which stars Sophie Turner as jewel thief Joan Hannington, and The Librarians: The Next Chapter, a spin-off the TNT series that starred Rebecca Romijn and Christian Kane. It will also air new seasons of crime drama 61st Street and reality dating series FBoy Island after those shows were dropped by other services.
