Billing departments will never voluntarily tell you about this little secret to getting a discount on your hospital or medical bill. If you can afford to pay your entire balance, ask for something called a “prompt pay discount.” This discount is usually about 15% of the out of pocket cost.
In general, most public hospitals offer some type of financial assistance to low income customres. If you can’t pay your bill, you are likely eligible. You can take bills that are thousands of dollars and get them down to a few hundred dollars.
