Your Favorite Video Game SUCKS: Super Mario Bros

There are things that people absolutely love, but even things that are great kind of suck. That's what we're looking at with our new series, "Your Favorite Thing Sucks". In this episode, we're going to talk about why Your Favorite Video Game SUCKS: Super Mario Bros for the NES.

Sure, the original Super Mario Brothers pretty much started a genre, but at the same time, it wasn't competing against much either. What did it have on store shelves that was anything like it? Pac-Man? Pitfall? Pong? It was the beneficiary of low expectations and no real competition. It got the benefit of being amazing compared to the garbage that was out there.

The original Super Mario Bros uses repetition to its full advantage. Think about it, there are 4 music tracks throughout the whole game. The overworld music, the underwater music, the underworld music, and the castle music. Want more songs in this? Too bad sucker, we've already got your money and you're only getting four songs!

Not only was the music repetitious, but so were the levels. Look at all of the levels that were the exact same as another one, just with different enemies in spaces, for the castles that had the fire ropes in later levels versus the ones that didn't. This game is so repetitious Nintendo deliberately put things in it so you could skip parts of the game and get to the good stuff.

People talk about the Duck Hunt Dog being one of the biggest douchebags in all of video games, but what about the toads that are in Super Mario Bros at the end of each castle? They mock you, all that hard work and they mock you because they're freeloading someplace where they shouldn't be. You know what, I'm glad Bowser captured you and you can burn in the lava in the castle?

Let's talk about some truly disturbing things about this game too. You know those bricks that you break throughout the game? Well if you read the manual, those are toads! Mario is a murderer! And what exactly was Princess Peach doing with the king of the Koopas? Was Super Mario Brothers promoting bestiality?

Of course, all these flaws and many more, people overlook because in the end Super Mario Bros is an absolute masterpiece and help to redefine what a video game was. It deserves its place as one of the best games in all of video game history, even though it is highly flawed.
