Before Anglo-European expansion and settlement, the Camas Prairie was a principal camas root gathering area and summer hunting grounds for the Native American peoples of the middle Snake River region (Statham 1982). Bannock, Shoshoni, and Northern Paiute family bands were some of the most common tribes that congregated on the prairie in spring and early summer to hunt and dig camas bulbs. In this region, camas bulbs were a seasonal principle food source for the local native population. Subsequent expansion and colonialism drove off the natives and the history of the region and it’s significance was lost as early as 1860 (IOGW). Regardless of the destructive history of colonialism and expansion in the region, one significant native artifact has lived on. Apparently this region was such a significant resource to the native cultures that utilized them through the millennia that they constructed a complex series of canals and holding ponds with associated geoglyphs. These complex structures, most likely were practical as well as symbolic based on current observations and assumptions. #archeology #science #NativeAmerican #bioglyph #geoglyph
