I wrote March to the Majority in part because I realized that there was an idealism an optimism, a sense of getting things done.President Ronald Reagan had taught us that he knew that the American people wanted positive ideas. They wanted a sense that you could replace welfare with work, that you could cut taxes to create jobs, that you could, in fact, have a better country with a better future. And that that's what America was all about. And so we wanted to reestablish that and in March the Majority. We tried to explain in detail this is how we did it. For 16 years, we worked to grow a Republican majority. And when we won in 1994 with the Contract with America, we were standing on Ronald Reagan's shoulders. He had proposed welfare reform running for governor in 1965. We finally passed it in 1996. People went back to work by the millions. Children suddenly found that their parents were working. Incomes were going up. It was the best program for taking children out of poverty ever in American history. I believe we can do those things again. And that's why I think that March to the Majority is such an important book.
