Confessional Vs. Evangelical Church - Consumerist Format Hinders Christ-centered Preaching

I recently went back to visit an Evangelical Church after Going to a Confessional Church for years. I realized that the format of Evangelical Church services in America today actually makes it harder successfully preach a Christ-centered message. Here I describe my experience and detail some of the ways this is so.

Confessional churches are ones in which confession is made each week, both in terms of we confess that we have failed God, but that Christ has rescued us, and also confess one of the the three main creeds of the church as what it means to be a Christian, all of which discuss the person or work of Christ. They are also often characterized by singing all stanzas of theologically-rich traditional hymns which also emphasize the work of Christ and lack a full band or "worship team". The congregation also does a reading and response, a liturgy, typically based on a Psalm, that also points to the work and person of Christ. The sermon is typically shorter than in Evangelical services, as it is less about the pastor and more about celebrating what Christ has done. Each element of the service supports that message. Communion is bi-weekly.
