Acrylic Paint Pour - Which way you pour does matter!

Experiment - What happens if I pour my acrylic paint dirty pour cup out from the front of the cup, from the back of the cup, or from the side of the cup?

Answer - What way you pour does matter! Each one creates a slightly different effect as the paint is coming out of the cup from a different angle and with different ratios of color.

With this acrylic paint pour experiment we started with three identical dirty pour cups filed with two layers of three different colors (phthalo blue, phthalo green, and titanium white). All the paint was added to the cup from one side. We then poured paint onto the canvas in three different ways.

The first was from the direction the paint was poured in which we call the front. This way created very heavy concentrations of each of the colors especially around the outside of the painting. There were not near as many distinct lines between the colors. The white dominated the center of the pour.

The second was from the opposite direction the paint was poured in which we call the back. This created pretty distinct sections of color in reverse order of the way they went into the cup. The lines between colors where very distinct for about 270' of the painting with the other 90' getting dominated by the color in the bottom of the cup which was white.

The third was from the side of the cup. This method was our favorite as it created the most interesting "bands" of distinct colors for the majority of the pour. We did have a section of white that was creating a sort of cloudy effect that was pretty cool but that distracted from the rest of the painting so it was tilted off.

Materials Used:

Pouring medium - 70% all-purpose Elmer's glue, 5% Liquitex Pouring Medium, 25% water.
Paint was mixed at 2 parts medium to 1 part paint.
