"Knocking on Forbidden Doors" is a song by the German electronic music group Enigma, released in 1990 as the third single from their debut album MCMXC a.D.
The song was written by Michael Cretu and produced by Cretu and Frank Peterson. The song is a new-age track with a Middle Eastern flavor. It features a spoken-word intro by Sandra Cretu, Michael's wife at the time, and a female choir singing in Arabic. The song's lyrics are about seeking knowledge and enlightenment.
"Knocking on Forbidden Doors" was a commercial success, reaching number one in several countries, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. It was also a critical success, winning a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 1991.
