The song was written by Michael Cretu and produced by Cretu and Frank Peterson. The song is a new-age track with a Middle Eastern flavor. It features a spoken-word intro by Sandra Cretu, Michael's wife at the time, and a female choir singing in Arabic. The song's lyrics are about seeking knowledge and enlightenment.
"Knocking on Forbidden Doors" was a commercial success, reaching number one in several countries, including Germany, France, and the United Kingdom. It was also a critical success, winning a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in 1991.
