Plasma arc bolts of lightening are one of the only things that can strike a surface at 90 degree angles 99% of the time no mater what that surface shape is. And, can do this on a cosmic scale. Even tho there is another means to produce such craters, that method (as far as I can tell) would not produce the same pattern that we in fact see.
