Ostriches are rare prey for cheetahs. Because of their danger, cheetahs are likely to avoid hunting larger animals such as ostriches unless they are very hungry and willing to harm themselves. At their top speed, cheetahs are capable of running for around 30 seconds, which is very little compared to the ostrich, which is capable of running 30 miles per hour for up to 30 minutes or more. The herds that ostriches live in have around 12 members and are another reason why cheetahs do not normally target ostriches.
