David Johnston resigns as special rapporteur on Chinese interference.
David Johnston a personal friend of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed as a special rapporteur to investigate allegations of the Chinese government interfering in Canadian elections has finally resigned after he tabled his report . essentially saying nothing to see hear - move along. He might have been correct but the investigation had the appearance of being so tainted the other political parties were all in agreement the report was suspect. The vast majority of Canadians felt it was suspect too.
It is surprising a man of his experience which includes being the Governor General of Canada would have accepted such an assignment, even more surprising he would have submitted the report and then defied the will of the Canadian People and refused to step aside. David Johnston should have refused the appointment in the beginning and never put himself in a position where he had to resign. His actions and Trudeau's staunch defense of him casts considerable doubt on the integrity of the Canadian government.Trudeau when you appoint an new rapporteur please appoint one free of the appearance of conflict of interest and expand their terms to include any country that may be interfering with our elections and elected officials. No country should be allowed to interfere with our elections or elected officials
