When I was writing, March to the Majority to explain how we had grown a House Republican majority, how we developed the Contract with America and how we negotiated with Bill Clinton to get things like welfare reform and four consecutive balanced budgets. I was reminded that the first time we did that wasn’t 1994. We stood on the Capitol steps in 1980 with Ronald Reagan. He had the courage running for president. First time a Republican had done this to draw every Republican candidate for the House and Senate to come together. And he offered what he called a contract.So the first Contract with America was Ronald Reagan's and it was big ideas, a big approach. And it worked. That year, we picked up the Senate when nobody thought we had a chance to become a majority. And for the first time since 1954, there was a majority in the Senate. Reagan won by the biggest electoral college margin against an incumbent president in history. And it taught us a lesson. Big ideas, big solutions, big idealism appeals to the American people. They want people who are positive, who are problem solving, who believe in America and are willing to work hard. And that's why I wrote March to the Majority because I believe that together we can do once again what Ronald Reagan did and what we did in 1994. We can create a movement that makes America a much better place.
