Greek word of the day- ἐμπλέκω emplékō, em-plek'-o; from G1722 and G4120; to entwine, i.e. (figuratively) involve with:—entangle (in, self with).

2Ti 2:4

No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

INTRODUCTION THE BOOK OF ZECHARIAH

Author: Zechariah- His name means "HE WHOM GOD REMEMBERS" - The prophet was born in Babylon, and returned to Judah in 537 BC. The prophet was well established in Babylon among his people during their captivity.

Date: 520-480 BC- and his prophecies coincide with the prophet Haggai.

Major Theme: "Encouraging the returning captives to rebuild the temple." Zechariah and his prophecies- messianic, apocalyptic, and eschatological.

Zechariah foretells Christ coming in lowliness and humility- (see 6:12; 13:7)- Christ rejection and betrayal for thirty pieces of silver (11:12-13), Christ's crucifixion (13:7), Christ priesthood (6:13), Christ heritage (6:13; 9:9; 14:9; and v. 16), Christ coming in His glory (14:4), His building of the Lord's temple (6:12-13), and His reign (9:10, 14), and also Christ establishment of peace and prosperity (3:10; 9:9-10).

For the prophets prophecies that are apocalyptic and eschatological- the prophet foretold the invasion of Jerusalem (12:1-3; 14:1-2), the victory of Judah's enemies (14:2), the Lord's defense of Jerusalem (14:3-4), the judgment on the nations (12:9; 14:3), and the geographical changes in Judah (14:4-5), and also the commemoration of the "FEAST OF TABERNACLES" in the messianic age (14:16-19), and the fulfillment of the prophecies about the holiness of the Israelites (14:20-21).

According to the commentary of the Orthodox study Bible the book of Zechariah helps developed the theology of angels, God communicates through the angels to Zechariah. Many of the NT apocalyptic images are also foreshadowed in the book of Zechariah.

Background: the first year of Cyrus the Great of Persia, there was a decree that was issued permitting the return of the Jews to Jerusalem with a commission to rebuild the temple. The Israelites were brought back by Zerubbabel and Joshua.
