"I Won't Back Down," written by Jeff Lynn and Tom Petty, was Tom Petty's first hit as a solo artist landing at the no. 12 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1989 (Whitburn, 2013). This song is found on Petty's first solo album "Full Moon Fever." Although members of his band the Heartbreakers did contribute to the album and this song, they were not credited as the album's artist (songfacts, 2023). The song was written in response to an arsonist who burnt down Petty's home; "'I Won't Back Down' was his way of reclaiming his life and getting past the torment" (songfacts, 2023).
