Date – Friday, June 23rd - 2023 – St. Etheldreda

in primitive England, a noble princess named Etheldreda, daughter of King Anna of East Anglia, lived amidst the dawn of the Middle Ages. She was not like the delicate ladies of later centuries, adorned in fine silks and porcelain-like appearances. No, Etheldreda was strong, accustomed to laboring in the forest, tending to her own chores, and caring for livestock. She possessed both the ruggedness of her surroundings and the nobility of her birth, embodying the birth of a new era.

Etheldreda was married at a young age to Tonbert, the Prince of the Gyrwe. But despite their union, they chose to live in perfect chastity. As part of their marriage settlement, Tonbert bestowed upon her the estate of Ely. Sadly, just three years into their marriage, Tonbert passed away, leaving Etheldreda widowed. Choosing a life of seclusion and devotion, she withdrew from the court and sought refuge on the island of Ely. There, she immersed herself in penance and prayer.

However, the demands of the state intervened, and Etheldreda was married again, this time to Egfried, the young son of King Oswiu of Northumbria. Though Egfried was only fifteen, he respected Etheldreda's vow of chastity. But after twelve years, he decided to claim his conjugal rights. Etheldreda, having dedicated herself entirely to God, refused to comply. Seeking guidance, she turned to St. Wilfrid, the Bishop of Northumbria, who supported her claim and advised her to seek refuge in a convent.

With Egfried's consent, Etheldreda became a nun at Codingham Convent. However, her heart yearned for her home in Ely, and she eventually returned there. She established a grand double monastery, becoming its revered Abbess. For the remainder of her days, Etheldreda guided the monastery with wisdom and grace, leading numerous souls to heaven.

On June 23, 695, St. Etheldreda passed away within the walls of Ely, leaving behind a legacy of strength, sacrifice, and purity. Her life embodied the grandeur and contrast of that age, blending the savage with the supernatural in extraordinary beauty. Etheldreda's family was a court where saints were born, with four brothers and sisters sharing her holiness, and St. Wilfrid serving as their spiritual director. Even the two Princes who married her respected her vow of virginity, perhaps owing to their devout lives.

During the Protestant Revolution, St. Etheldreda's incorrupt body was sadly destroyed, leaving only her hand as a relic. Yet, her spirit endured, honored in a small chapel in Ely. Her example and the Ely Abbey, the religious institutions she established, were seeds that helped cultivate the Middle Ages. Etheldreda's perseverance in purity, her sacrifice of royal privileges, and her dedication to God continue to inspire those who strive for the establishment of a civilization that brings glory to God and embraces the Reign of Mary.

Let us, then, seek the intercession of St. Etheldreda, a shining beacon in the dawn of a new era. May she bless those who fight for the establishment of a civilization rooted in faith, just as she did centuries ago.
