I recently purchased the MSR DynaLock Ascent Foldable Carbon Backcountry Trekking Poles and I have to say, Im incredibly impressed with this product. At 6 feet tall, I ordered the large size and found that they were the perfect fit for me.
When folded, they measure around 16 inches and can extend up to 4 feet 7 inches in height. One of the first things I noticed was how fast they were to deploy, which is a great feature when youre out in the backcountry.
The poles are also very compact and the slider adjustment is very secure, which is important for me as I need to be able to rely on my equipment. The poles are made up of five pieces that interlock together.
The bottom three pole sections are corded together and you simply push down the red third section until it snaps into place, which helps set the bottom section of the pole.
Once youve released the lever, you can then slide the pole to your preferred height using the marked measurements and tighten it back in place. Its worth noting that you should also check to ensure that the pole wont slide down with downward pressure.
If it does, you can simply open the lever and turn the adjustment roller to the plus side until it retains a tight hold. There are also Velcro straps to hold everything together, which is a great added bonus.
Another feature that I love is the straps on top of the poles. They slide easily in your hands and you can then pull down the loose end to tighten the strap on your hand.
This remains firmly in place, even with downward pressure. If you need to remove your hands, you can easily slide it open, even if youre wearing gloves.
The only thing I would say is that aggressive skiers need to be careful not to slide their ski edges into the carbon fiber, which could cause damage to the poles.
Overall, I would highly recommend these poles to anyone whos looking for a super light, strong, compact and reliable set of trekking poles. Theyre definitely worth the investment!
