Making Your Sculptures Symmetrical - Two Easy Tricks

This is a short video to show you some tips for making your sculptures symmetrical. The biggest problem I have is getting both eyes in the same place, the same size, and looking in the same direction. (Is that three problems?) I used these tips today to help me with my goat's eyes. One of the biggest problems with animals, especially the ones who keep their eyes on the side of their heads instead of the front, is that you can really only see one eye at the same time. Still, you want them to both be the same. After using the first tip in this video I'm much happier with my goat sculpture.

The 'acetate alternative' trick would work just as well if you have an empty picture frame with a piece of glass. It is a bit fiddly - you have to close one eye when you're looking at one side, draw on the shapes with your dry erase marker, and then when you flip it over and look at the other side you'll need to close the other eye. This was really apparent when I worked from the front of the goat. I made sure to mark the center line, so I would get my head in the same place. Like I said - it's a little tricky, but it was worth the extra effort.

I do sometimes us a mirror, too. It's the trick to start with because it's easier, and sometimes it's all you need. For my goat problem, it didn't really help much because the eyes didn't look right when I looked at them from the front.
