Four NASA astronauts have begun a year-long mission called CHAPEA 1, which simulates living conditions on Mars. The astronauts entered a 158-square-meter living space known as "Mars Dune Alpha" and will not leave until July 7, 2024. The purpose of the mission is to study crew health and performance in an environment that closely resembles conditions on the red planet. The living space is equipped with 3D-printed structures, and the astronauts will eat, sleep, and work inside it. They will only venture out to a simulated Martian surface, which is a 1,200-square-foot sandbox filled with material resembling Mars regolith. This mission is part of NASA's ongoing efforts to prepare for future manned missions to Mars.
