My guest on Unlocked this week is Michael Hillman. He is a founding member of a Department of Energy (DOE) Knowledge management committee, a position he has held since 2002. Knowledge transfer is a personal objective and passion for him. He makes sure to always put junior staff with senior staff so that knowledge and expertise can be gained over time–a powerful way to assure that knowledge of the work is transferred effectively. He literally wrote the U.S. Department of Energy textbook on readiness!

Michael takes this same approach in his current incarnation as the editor of two local newspapers here in Maryland. He wants readers to not just have the news, but have it in a way that is understandable so that knowledge and insight can be gained to make the community stronger. To facilitate this, he recruits English and Communications majors from the local college to work on the papers.

Hillman says, “For me, if you can’t communicate effectively what you have learned, you’re doomed to repeat past mistakes. That’s a lesson I learned from the DOE which I will never forget.”
