The Battle of Cable Street

The Battle of Cable Street is a significant event in British history that took place in the East End of London on October 4th 1936. It was a clash between the Metropolitan Police and anti-fascist demonstrators, including local residents, trade unionists, socialists, and Jewish groups, who were protesting against a march by the British Union of Fascists (BUF), led by Sir Oswald Mosley.

At that time, the BUF was gaining popularity with its fascist and anti-Semitic ideology. Sir Oswald Mosley planned a provocative march through the heavily Jewish and immigrant-populated area of Cable Street in the East End of London.

The local community, along with various anti-fascist organisations, were determined to stop the march from taking place.
