➡️ Cricothyrotomy
A cricothyrotomy is a surgical procedure in which a small incision is made in the neck to allow air to enter the lungs. It is typically performed in emergency situations when other methods of ventilation are not possible or have failed.

The cricothyrotomy procedure is considered to be a last resort measure, as it carries with it a number of risks, including the potential for damage to the nerves and blood vessels in the neck. Additionally, there is a small risk of infection at the incision site. Despite the risks, a cricothyrotomy may be the only option for patients who are suffering from a life-threatening condition that is causing them to stop breathing. In these cases, the procedure can literally be a matter of life and death.

The cricothyrotomy procedure is indicated in CICO scenarios. CICO stands for: Cannot Intubate, Cannot Oxygenate. This means that the patient has a difficult airway and other intubation attempts have failed. This is considered to be a life-threatening emergency situation because, without ventilation and oxygenation, brain hypoxia will occur, leading to death. That is why this is an important procedure because it can help establish an airway so that air (and oxygen) can enter the lungs.
