➡️ Costophrenic Angle
The angle where the pleura meets the diaphragm is known as the costophrenic angle. It is located in the right and left lateral and inferior regions of the thoracic cavity. During a chest radiograph, this angle should be clearly visible which means that it serves as an important anatomical landmark for Respiratory Therapists and medical professionals.

➡️ Chest Radiograph
During a normal chest x-ray, it forms a sharp angle that is approximately 30 degrees. However, if the patient has a certain lung condition, it can affect the visibility of this landmark. If a patient has a lung disease that causes excess fluid to build up in the lungs, it can cause the costophrenic angle to appear blunted or flattened on the chest x-ray. This would cause that 30-degree angle to appear closer to 90 degrees.

➡️ Effusion
The most common example of when you may see blunting of the costophrenic angle is whenever a pleural effusion is present. The pooling of fluid in the lungs would cause this angle to appear more rounded rather than forming a sharp point. It is believed that blunting will occur on the frontal view of a chest x-ray once 175-200 mL of fluid has accumulated in the pleural cavity. On a posterior view, the costophrenic angle may become blunted whenever only 75-100 mL of fluid has accumulated.

➡️ Thoracentesis
A thoracentesis would be indicated where a hollow need is inserted in order to remove fluid from the pleural space. Again, for this video, we just wanted to provide you with a brief overview of this topic. We'll be breaking it down into much more detail in a separate video.
