➡️ Apnea Definition
Apnea is a breathing pattern that literally means no breathing. This means that there is no effort or movement of the inspiratory muscles and the volume of the lungs does not change. Apnea can cause severe complications throughout the body because, without breathing, our tissues and organs are unable to obtain the oxygen that is required for survival. In fact, permanent brain damage or even death can occur within minutes during a period of apnea unless ventilation (and oxygenation) is restored.

➡️ Causes of Apnea:
- Cardiac arrest
- Severe brain trauma
- Narcotic overdose

➡️ Apnea Overview
Apnea can also occur voluntarily by breath-holding, and it can be mechanically induced by choking or strangulation. However, we're focusing on the types of apnea that results from medical complications. One of the most common types is known as sleep apnea which occurs when a patient stops breathing while asleep. The two types of sleep apnea are 1) obstructive and 2) central sleep apnea which we have covered in other videos on our channel. Again, for this video, we just wanted to provide you with a brief overview of this topic. We'll be breaking it down into much more detail in a separate video.
