➡️ Base Excess Definition
Base excess is a value that measures all of the bases in arterial blood, not just bicarbonate. With that said, bicarbonate does make up the largest portion of the base buffer, so we as Respiratory Therapists and medical professionals can generally use the base excess value as a way to assess a patient's bicarb levels. So, as a general rule of thumb, a high base excess can be interpreted as a high level of bicarbonate.

➡️ Base Excess Overview
The name "base excess" can be misleading because there may actually be a base deficit instead. The normal value range is -2 to +2 with an expected value of 0. A base excess (or a base deficit) is a way to determine the amount of base that is required in order to normalize the pH of the blood.

➡️ Examples:
🟦 Metabolic alkalosis is a state in which there is more bicarbonate in the blood, therefore, the base excess value would be greater than +2 mEq/L.

🟦 Metabolic acidosis is a state in which there is less bicarbonate in the blood, therefore, the base excess value would be less than -2 mEq/L.
