➡️ What are Methylxanthines?
Methylxanthines, or simply Xanthines for short, are a class of medications that are derived from a purine base that is naturally produced by both plants and animals. They work by increasing the amount of cAMP in smooth muscle tissues which ultimately results in bronchodilation. This is why they can be used for the treatment of reversible obstructive diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema.

▪ Theophylline
▪ Aminophylline
▪ Theobromine
▪ Caffeine

➡️ Can They Treat Infants?
Methylxanthines are also often effective in treating infants with poor respiratory drive and those experiencing episodes of apnea. This is especially true in premature and low-birth-weight infants. Methylxanthines can be administered orally in tablet form or as an oral solution. They can also be delivered intravenously as well.

➡️ Adverse Effects:
Some of the adverse side effects that can come with this medication include nausea, vomiting, gastric reflux, insomnia, headaches, tremors, and palpitations.
