➡️ Pneumothorax Definition
Medically speaking, it's a term that is often referred to as a collapsed lung. It occurs when air leaks into the pleural space which alters the pressure that keeps the lungs inflated. It could result from an open injury to the chest wall, or from a nontraumatic event in which the cause is unknown.

➡️ Signs and Symptoms of a Pneumothorax:
- Hypoxemia
- Dyspnea
- Chest tightness
- Cyanosis
- Tachycardia
- Decreased breath sounds over the affected side
- Sudden increase in peak and plateau pressure
- Mediastinal and tracheal shift away from the affected side
- Hyperresonant percussion note over the affected lung
- Asymmetric chest movement
- Subcutaneous Emphysema

Keep in mind that the signs and symptoms may vary from patient to patient depending on their condition. These are just a few of the most common examples. When diagnosing a potential pneumothorax, the patient's signs and symptoms should let you know right away that it's a possibility.

➡️ Diagnostic Tests for a Pneumothorax:
- Chest x-ray
- Arterial Blood Gas
- CT scan
- Thoracic ultrasound

➡️ Pneumothorax Treatment:
The treatment methods for a pneumothorax will also vary from patient to patient depending on the severity of their signs and symptoms. For example, a small, less severe pneumothorax may only require bedrest and limited physical activity in order for it to be resolved. However, a more severe, larger pneumothorax will require the insertion of a chest tube or pleural drainage system so that the air leakage can be removed. Oxygen therapy would be indicated for hypoxemia, and hyperinflation therapy may be beneficial as well. And, in severe cases, intubation and mechanical ventilation would be indicated for acute ventilatory failure. I should also mention that needle aspiration is another method for draining excess air from the pleural space that can be performed at bedside in emergency situations.
