Biot's breathing is a chaotic respiratory pattern that has an irregular rate and tidal volume with periods of apnea. It's often found in patients with an acute neurological disease. This abnormal pattern is often caused by damage to the pons in the brain that is due to a stroke or trauma. It can be caused by opioid use as well.

This pattern became notable thanks to a French physician by the name of Camille Biot. In 1876, he concluded that, while similar to Cheyne–Stokes breathing, this pattern should be considered separately and not as a variant. The name stuck, and that is where Biot's breathing gets its name. As a Respiratory Therapist or medical professional, Biot's breathing is one of the abnormal breathing patterns that you must be familiar with.
