Epiglottitis is an acute upper airway infection that causes severe supraglottic swelling. This means that, and it's an important thing to remember, the swelling occurs above the vocal cords. That is the primary way to differentiate this condition from Croup because instead, it has subglottic swelling which means that it occurs below the vocal cords. Epiglottitis is a condition that is often life-threatening and should be considered a medical emergency. The patient will likely require immediate intubation and mechanical ventilatory support. Another thing that you should know is that Epiglottitis is a bacterial infection that is often caused by Haemophilus influenza bacteria. Therefore, antibiotics can be used to treat this infection.
