➡️ What is Pulmonary Diffusion Capacity?
As we just mentioned, it's defined as the amount of gas that is transferred from the alveoli in the lungs to capillary blood during gas exchange. Once air from the lungs crosses the alveolar-capillary membrane, it is picked up by red blood cells and transported to the organs and tissues of the body. The primary goal of the lungs is to take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide during a normal breathing cycle.

➡️ This process is referred to as Gas Exchange.
And without this process, humans would not be able to survive. While we're learning about pulmonary diffusion, it's important to know how oxygen and carbon dioxide molecules are transported in the body. The majority of oxygen molecules are transported from the lungs to other parts of the body via red blood cells. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin which picks up oxygen molecules so that they can move through arteries to the tissues of the body. Carbon dioxide is transported as bicarbonate, carbaminohemoglobin. or dissolved in the plasma of blood. Again, understanding these basic fundamental concepts is important for Respiratory Therapists and medical professionals.
