➡️ Cor Pulmonale Definition:Tes
Cor pulmonale is a pulmonary heart disease because, as we mentioned, high blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries of the lungs causes the right ventricle to enlarge when inhibits it from pumping blood effectively. Over time, this results in failure of the right side of the heart. Chronic cor pulmonale is usually caused by COPD or other respiratory conditions that cause low blood oxygen levels.

➡️ Causes of Cor Pumonale:
- COPD
- ARDS
- Pulmonary hypertension
- Interstitial lung disease
- Cystic fibrosis
- Bronchiectasis
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- Blood clots in the lungs
- Bronchopulmonary dysplasia

➡️ Signs and Symptoms of Cor Pulmonale:
- Dyspnea
- Tachycardia
- Chest pain
- Fatigue
- Cyanosis
- Fluid retention
- Jugular venous distention
- Abnormal heart sounds

➡️ These signs and symptoms help with the diagnosis of cor pulmonale, however, the following tests may be required:
- Chest x-ray
- CT scan
- Echocardiogram
- Electrocardiogram (EKG)
- Arterial Blood Gas (ABG)
- Right heart catheterization

➡️ Treatment Methods for Cor Pulmonale:
The most important method is to treat the causes of pulmonary hypertension which, as we discussed, is the underlying cause of failure in the right ventricle. Oxygen therapy may be indicated for hypoxemia. Diuretic medications can be given for fluid retention. Other medications that may be indicated include vasodilators, anticoagulants, and antiarrhythmic agents. Again, we created this quick video just to give you a brief overview of this topic.
