➡️ What is Acute Bronchitis?
Bronchitis is a term that refers to inflammation of the bronchial tubes within the lungs. Acute bronchitis commonly develops after a cold or respiratory infection. The good thing about this type is that it typically improves within a few days and doesn't leave any lasting effects. Then there is chronic bronchitis, which tends to be more serious, and is the type that we're going to be focusing on in this video.

➡️ Chronic Bronchitis Definition:
As we mentioned earlier, chronic bronchitis is actually a type of COPD because it develops over time rather than suddenly. It results in increased mucus in the airways and a productive cough that occurs for at least three months of the year for more than two consecutive years. This type of airflow constriction makes it difficult for the patient to breathe and, over time, it often leads to emphysema which is the other type of COPD.

➡️ Signs and Symptoms of Chronic Bronchitis:
▪ Dyspnea
▪ Wheezing
▪ Increased mucus production
▪ Cough
▪ Chest discomfort
▪ Hypercapnia
▪ Ventilatory failure

➡️ Diagnostic Tests for Chronic Bronchitis:
▪ Chest x-ray
▪ Pulse oximetry
▪ Arterial Blood Gas
▪ CT scan
▪ Sputum culture and sensitivity
▪ Pulmonary Function Testing

➡️ Treatment for Chronic Bronchitis:
▪ Low-flow oxygen therapy
▪ Quit smoking tobacco
▪ Inhaled bronchodilator medications
▪ Inhaled corticosteroids
▪ Antibiotics
▪ Bronchial hygiene therapy
▪ Airway clearance therapy
▪ Pulmonary rehabilitation
▪ Disease management education

➡️ Other Treatment Considerations:
Also note that, during an acute exacerbation, noninvasive ventilation may be indicated in order to assist with ventilation. And in severe cases, intubation and mechanical ventilation would be indicated for ventilatory failure. Taking yearly recommended vaccinations to prevent respiratory infections can also help prevent chronic bronchitis from occurring as well.
