➡️ Diuretic Agents Definition
Diuretics are a class of medication that stimulates urine production to promote the excretion of excess water and sodium in patients who are fluid overloaded.

➡️ Types of Diuretic Agents
Loop diuretics are one of the most common types and they work by blocking the reabsorption of sodium in the ascending loop of Henle in the kidneys. This facilitates the excretion of water and sodium from the body. Furosemide (Lasix) is the most common type of loop diuretic agent, and it is typically administered for the treatment of CHF, pulmonary edema, peripheral edema, and hypertension. Osmotic diuretics are another type and they're typically administered for the treatment of urinary abnormalities. An example of this type is mannitol (Osmitrol). The use of diuretic agents can lead to elevated bicarbonate and decreased chloride levels in the body which results in metabolic alkalosis. They may also cause decreased potassium and magnesium levels as well. Diuretic medications can be taken orally although they are effective and work faster when given intravenously.
